東方Project is a series of games created by ZUN. Most of the mainline games are bullet hells, which is a subgenre of shoot 'em up video games where your main goal is to dodge and survive a stream of bullets. The Windows era of 東方Project is what most people are referring to when they talk about the games. The first Windows game was Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, the sixth game in the series, which paved the way for most of 東方Project's main gameplay mechanics and introduced some of its most important characters.
For newcomers to the series, I highly recommend starting with Embodiment of Scarlet Devil or Perfect Cherry Blossom. 東方Project also has a variety of fighting games, such as Scarlet Weather Rhapsody and Antinomy of Common Flowers, if bullet hells aren’t your thing.
You've probably seen mentions of it online through its music or characters. Bad Apple!! is probably one of the most popular 東方-related media pieces that many people have seen without realizing it's connection with 東方Project—along with Night of Nights, UN Owen Was Her?, and Cirno’s Perfect Math Class. Some of the most popular characters in doujin culture are Cirno, Reimu, Marisa, Remilia, and Flandre.
東方Project is widely known for its music, characters, and challenging gameplay. I personally am mostly a fan of the gameplay, and I'm also big into shipping culture. In terms of story, my favorite game is 東方永夜抄 (Touhou 8: Imperishable Night). For gameplay, I love 東方花映塚 (Touhou 9: Phantasmagoria of Flower View) and 東方星蓮船 (Touhou 12: Undefined Fantastic Object).
I'm a huge fan of Reimari — a femslash ship between the protagonists Reimu and Marisa. Mokou × Kaguya is also one of my favorites. I multiship sometimes, so I also like Reimu × Remilia and Keine × Mokou… Honestly, I’ll probably enjoy most ships in general! I spend most of my time on Dynasty Reader reading 東方 doujinshi when I'm not coding or working lol.
Next up to add to the memorabilia is the figures! I was going to link each fumo to a shopping page, but I got lazy. Buy fumos on AmiAmi. Or don’t, and buy them off Amazon like I do—because Fumo elitists can’t tell me what to do!!! I AM NOT SPENDING $100 ON A PLUSHIE. Bootlegs have a cute charm to them anyway. Stay funky, everyone! ദ്ദി ᗜˬᗜ
